Vacation and Classes

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 by Ryan Hill

I just got back from a vacation to the beach and I'm so glad I was able to take my GSC studies with me! Both of my classes are online this semester, and I was able to work on papers while I was relaxing. I have had to miss classes before for vacation and it really impacts the momentum and how you learn. It was very convenient to take my computer and check-in while away from home, keeping me from getting behind -  just another reason I enjoy online courses.

Being in my third online class, I've noticed different teaching styles and class layouts in the moodle site. I enjoy trying each one and continue learning more about my online learning preferences. I enjoy meeting new people from all over the state in different places and social exposures - it really adds great insight into life in other parts of the state. I'm happy to say I've already completed a six-week intensive class online this semester and am one step closer to earning my bachelor's degree! Yay! I can't believe how fast these last few classes have flown by.

I recieved my Granite State College summer catalog in the mail the other day - can't wait to register for classes for next semester. Bring on summer!!!!! :)

Spring Online at GSC

Monday, April 15, 2013 by Ryan Hill

Winter semester at GSC is over - YAYYYYYYYYY! All my hard work is paying off and I'm now one step closer to having my degree in-hand. After taking an online class for the first time this semester, I'm happy to say I loved it. I was always skeptical about how I would do with it, and it turns out to be a lot easier and better for my schedule than I thought. I'm now taking both of my classes online this (spring) semester. If you're thinking of applying to Granite State College, definitely look at the online programs! With so many options to choose from, it's a great way to incorporate schooling into your life.

It's not always easy to stay focused on school work - especially with warm weather right around the corner! I'm looking forward to finishing my courses AND enjoying time outside - taking classes online has really paved the way for that, an option I never took advantage of before. I'm quite excited for this oppertunity! I have a vacation booked in May and will simply take my computer with me and not miss anything in my class while I'm on the beach - WIN WIN!! Warm weather, new scenery, flowers, and courses. So much to look forward to- :)

Snow Day

Friday, March 22, 2013 by Ryan Hill

With more than 12" of new snow Tuesday, it's hard to believe that Wednesday was the first official day of spring! What a nice treat so close to the end of the semeter - to get a snow day and catch up on all the homework I have for the last week of classes at Granite State College. What better way to motiviate you to write papers than be stuck inside all day! The day also gave me extra time for my online class. I really enjoy the online class experience and look forward to taking another one next semester. I find it helps me balance my time beween working two jobs, living my life, and not having to be in a certain place for 3.5 hours. So much to look forward to next month - Espcially a new semester :)

The Power of Travel

Thursday, February 21, 2013 by Gail Gifford

I love to travel, always have. I travel so much that my friend at Granite State College never knew where I was at any single time. She would call and say, "where are you" every time we talked. Inevitably, I was in another state or city checking out the stores and sites. I would travel on weekends to visit new cities and towns in the area, especially if I was new to the area. There was no limit to the ground I would cover when I was behind the wheel of my car or on my bike. I also love history, so often found myself in museums. I enjoy seeing new art, visiting new knitting shops, and talking to people at various stores. Traveling is an outing for me, and my kind of adventure - I don't think I will ever stop.

This weekend, I'm traveling to see my daughter in Greenville, South Carolina. That is the very place I finished my online degree with Granite State College. I truly enjoyed going to school and online learning. I was never limited to what courses I could take - GSC offers so many options! Online learning is so convenient, even when you are a traveler. I was initially worried about taking a math class online, but the teacher was great and there were so many resources availabe for students to use. If you like to travel and you're looking to further your education, I highly recommend online learning.

If you are planning a move, a trip, or just wanting to try college, check out Granite State College and their online learning curriculum..... I think you will agree, it works!!

I started taking classes online at GSC last winter and I love how helpful the professors are. They are willing to help and work with you whatever the circumstances. I was really worried about college, but with all of the support of the professors and academic advisors, it has been much easier than I could have imagined!

My GSC Story

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 by Granite State College 40th Anniversary

There are many things to love about Granite State College. When I walked into my first class about three years ago, I was very nervous and quiet. GSC provided a relaxed atmosphere to learn and meet new and interesting people. I broke out of my shell and even began serving my town in ways I never thought were possible.

The flexibilty is very helpful for my lifestyle. I am epileptic and I can't drive. I have taken classes on campus but I have to rely on others to drive me. I find online classes very helpful - I can work around my busy schedule of home educating my children, conducting Bible lessons, caring for my family, and other life duties.

For many years I tried submitting an application to GSC but was afraid I could not succeed in working towards a college degree. My neurologist told me that he felt I had cognitive difficulties and that college wasn't right for me. Yes, I have epilepsy. Yes, I take an anti-seizure medication. Yes, there are side effects. That doesn't mean I can't learn. Thanks to GSC I am now half-way through my degree program with a goal of enrolling in a post-baccalaureate program. I am grateful for the opportunity of earning a college education. GSC is the best choice for me offering flexiblity and interesting classes that I can use in many aspects of my life. Thank you GSC!

Winter 2013

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 by Ryan Hill

I can't believe Christmas is over, and we're already starting a new semester here at Granite State College. There are so many new challenges I'm facing this semester as I'm taking my first online class and learning how to better manage my time for school work. I really enjoy being able to take this class at my own pace and on my own schedule. I'm enjoying learning the new technology of the online world, as well as exploring the new ways I can learn. With just about 9 classes to go, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I know this is going to be a great year for me :)

I lost my job in 2011 and don’t remember how many job interviews I have been on. It really takes a toll on your self-esteem. I am now enrolled in the master's degree program for Project Management. Granite State College has helped restore my self-esteem and improve my resume. I take classes online which helps my budget and being in the Project Management program has substantially improved my professional network. The job interviews I am going on now are much more positive and I am certain I will be working soon.

I've been taking classes on and off at Granite State College (starting when it was CLL) for well over 12 years. I love the flexibility of being able to take in-class, hybrid, or online classes - whatever fit my schedule. Every single interaction I have had with classmates, instructors, and staff has been positive and informative. GSC really knows what is important for adult learners with busy schedules. The flexibility has allowed me to finish my bachelor's degree and now I'm working toward my master's degree. I couldn't be more pleased.

GSC’s Service Desk is here to help!

Friday, January 25, 2013 by Jacqui Lantagne

The entire GSC community depends on their online connection to the college and nearly every single one of our students takes classes online… but what happens when technology isn’t cooperating?

Students (faculty and staff, as well!) who are having service issues can report them online or by calling 888.372.4270. In January 2013, GSC added some new features that make this resource even more useful for students.

Now, after you file a report, you’ll receive updates throughout your case including notifications when its created, when comments are added, and when the case is closed. Additionally, you can check in on your its status while it’s being worked on—a new feature!

Afterwards, the Service Desk will provide a brief survey to make sure that each of your needs was met.

The Service Desk is open:

Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Friday, 8:30 AM—4:30 PM
Closed Saturday & Sunday.

A staff member will respond to your case within 2 hours when received during service hours and within 24 hours if your request is submitted when the Service Desk is closed.

I was faltering while attending college at another school when I stumbled upon GSC via a web search. I decided to give it a shot and couldn't be happier with my choice! I have found a degree I LOVE! Knowing GSC is a part of the University System of NH makes me confident that this a credible school. The faculty here is amazing and so helpful! I had my entire class schedule planned out for my bachelor's degree program the first term I arrived. The online option has given me the flexability to work full time and continue to take care of my family while pursuing my education - I even made Deans list!! Thank you GSC!!!

Granite State College has a special place in my heart, not only because I completed my associate degree here years ago, but because of all the choices in colleges, I decided to come back here to finish my bachelor's degree. I've had nothing but positive experiences and, as a single working mom, I'm happy to be able to have the choice to take online classes to further my career. The advisors helpful and supportive, helping you reach your goals for the future. This is why I love GSC!

My GSC Story

GSC makes it easy for me to continue my education even though I have three little kids at home and a husband that travels often. I started at the college a few years back and have enjoyed taking classes online and in the Rochester, Concord, and Portsmouth locations. Every class has been great and the other students and teachers I have dealt with have all made the experience that much better. The degree program that I am currently enrolled in is perfect for me and exactly what I was looking for. The 4 terms a year allows me to take fewer classes a term while still completing my degree in a reasonable amount of time!

I always knew I wanted to go to college, but never knew what I wanted to do. I finally decided that I wanted to start taking classes and see where it led me. I'm only in my second semester, but I couldn't be happier with Granite State College. Between my advisor, the teachers I've dealt with this far, and anyone I've come in contact with, including the financial aid office, I couldn't be happier. Everyone is so helpful and patient - and the classes are easy to negotiate through. I didn't realize there would also be tutorials to help with someone (like me) who has never done online learning before. Every part of Granite State College has been amazing!

I switched to GSC from another online university. The process of getting enrolled, registered for classes, and transferring credits was fantastic! The whole experience was not what I expected - it was not as stressful and time consuming as I thought it would be. I am taking online classes but can take on-campus classes for subjects that I may struggle in. The staff has been so helpful and informative. They make my "silly" questions seem not so silly. I will finish my college career at GSC and appreciate the commitment that the staff of the college have to help me reach my goals.

Happy Anniversary GSC!!!!!

Top 5 reasons to take online classes

Friday, January 11, 2013 by Gail Gifford

As I was looking at the Granite State College Winter course schedule online, I was once again reminded of the flexibility that goes hand-in-hand with GSC's online classes.

1) A wide variety of classes available each term.

2) Consistency with the day each class starts.

3) Core classes offered each term.

4) Classes can be successfully competed from out of state.

5) Professors and staff are still there to support you when you have trouble with a class or just need a little more help for one reason or another.

The final two are the most important and strongest reasons in my mind to consider online classes with Granite State College. I can pesonally speak to this because I did all my Bachelor of Science classes online through GSC from two different states. I didn't skip a beat and my professors traveled with me. So, if you are wondering if you can do it while living far away and/or moving.... think no more, you can!

You can run, but you can’t hide—in online.

Wednesday, December 19, 2012 by Susan Gagnon

You can run, but you can’t hide—in online.

If you have never taken an online course, or have free floating anxiety about logging into a classroom, please read on. Some of the potential students I meet in information sessions, graduate school fairs, or speak with on the phone, have a huge block of fear when it comes to learning this way. At Granite State College (GSC), we offer two master’s degree programs: an M.S. in Leadership and M.S. in Project Management. We do offer a few graduate courses in Concord, Portsmouth, and Manchester - however, the majority of the Master of Science classes are often online.

Laura was an adult Granite State College student for several years, furiously working towards completing her baccalaureate degree while taking part time classes. She was a professional HR director, and GSC helped her get to where she wanted to be. She loved taking courses at GSC, and had taken them in all delivery methods - hybrid, weekend, evening, and online courses. I was delighted to meet Laura at a conference recently - her enthusiasm for lifelong learning was infectious. I thought she would be a great master's candidate for either the Project Management or Leadership program.

As she was nearing the end of her undergraduate career, the last course she needed to complete was Interpersonal Communication. It was a course offered online and she had every intention of taking it, even with its ironic online delivery. While telling me her story, I flashed back to my undergraduate days. I took Interpersonal Communication in a decade when online learning was not available. I quickly assumed it could only be a classroom course, learning the art and science of successful communication. I paused in my thoughts and was preparing for the worst. How could a college create this online? I prepared for a sympathetic reply.

As she continued her enthusiasm for (what I thought) was a pedagogical mish mash of course delivery gone wrong, I started to listen closer. Her family and friends thought she was making an error in judgment.  "Don’t do it," they said. "You’re crazy." She took the course successfully and told me it was the best course she ever took. The posts were lively, deep, and thoughtful. She made friends with a number of people in the virtual classroom. “You can’t hide in an online learning platform. Students who are shy in a classroom can’t hide in online learning. You can also think about your posts, edit, and get your point across clearly.” Her sales pitch was right on queue. And, I know she is correct.

This brief encounter with Laura gives me more fuel and intelligence for the GSC graduate programs. I have chatted with potential students who feel the same way Laura’s friends and family did. The anxiety about getting a graduate degree online can be eradicated when you listen to Laura's story. She preferred her online courses. It was her time. She’d get up at 5:00 a.m. and start her coursework before the day got away from her. Laura is now applying to Master of Science in Leadership, and is very excited about the incredibly flexible, affordable, and relevant program. “It’s time to do it. And, I love that I can take it online.”
