It’s a great day for our student and alumni community—Granite State College has its first ever Alumni Trustee on the University System of New Hampshire’s Board of Trustees.
Why is this so important?
On paper, this may seem like an ordinary leadership position, but it holds incredible promise for our community.
The University System of New Hampshire (USNH) represents the State’s four public colleges: UNH, Plymouth State, Keene State, and Granite State. About 25% of the Board positions are designated for alumni of the four colleges—Granite State College has had no alumni representation up until now.
We are grateful and fortunate to have incredible support from the Board of Trustees, and gaining representation directly from our alumni community will help ensure that the needs of our community are always covered.
What doors will this open for Granite State College?
With this important representation, our alumni-member of the Trustees can help advocate for opportunities that benefit working adult students, online higher education, and our other unique values.
Who is our first Alumni Trustee?
We are excited to share that our first Alumni Trustee is Christopher M. Pope!
Chris earned a Bachelor of Science in Public Safety Administration in 2004, graduating summa cum laude. Like many of our students, he arrived with rich career experience. Chris held a progression of roles in the Concord Fire Department, including Battalion Commander, Division Chief, and Chief. This experience gave him perspective that he could use in his studies and his degree offered concepts and skills that he could apply on the job.
In 2006, Pope became New Hampshire’s Director for the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and as Homeland Security Advisor to Governor John Lynch from 2006 to 2013.
We honored Chris with an award at the 2012 Commencement Ceremony for his outstanding contributions to the people of New Hampshire. In addition, Chris has as both an adjunct faculty member for student capstone projects and as a member of GSC’s President’s Advisory Board.
What else can you share about Chris Pope?
Through his service and work in New Hampshire, Chris has earned the esteem and respect of many important leaders.
“Because of his experience, he has a tremendous knowledge of the state and of state government. His appointment to the Board of Trustees will be good not only for Granite State College but also for the University System,” shared Former Governor John Lynch.
President Mark Rubinstein agrees: “I am grateful to Chris for his willingness to serve, believing as Governor Lynch stated, that his appointment will be good for the College and good for the University System.”
Please join us in welcoming Christopher M. Pope, ’04, home to Granite State College.
